Levi Roots

Levi Roots has a rich pedigree in music.

He was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998 for his ‘Free Your Mind album. He sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Nelson Mandela when the South African icon visited Brixton and played football with Bob Marley.

Levi’s album “Red Hot” was launched in Autumn 2009 by his own label, Sound Box Media and his latest album, Rise Above is out now.

Levi Began his musical career as a DJ/Singer on the great Sir Coxsone sound, his first recording Poor Man’s Story was an instant favourite with Reggae fans. Levi went on to front his own band Matic16 throughout the 80s.

As a solo artist in the 90s he toured and worked with Maxi Priest, Johnnie Clark, Lee Scratch Perry, and many more.

Currently, Levi has his own regular Reggae show on BBC Radio2 where he has remodelled himself as a Radio DJ and has built up a good following. His original experiences of working with the Sir Coxsone sound as helped him to carve out a new direction for his talents as a DJ Selector.
